About the Company

It was while helping his mum Velma care for his terminally ill step-dad Bob that Ken Waterhouse’s views on long term care began to change. With the perception of home care in the UK hitting an all time low in 2011 as cases of abuse, cruelty and even malnutrition made the headlines, Ken decided to try to change things by setting up a new company, Home Care Preferred.

Pairing over 30 years experience working in the retirement sector with a new conviction that most people would prefer to be cared for in their own homes, Ken established the first branch of Home Care Preferred in London in 2012.

Ken started his career in the care sector in 1988 when he opened his first care home. Since then he has owned and operated award winning care environments before launching his first domiciliary care service, Home Care Preferred.

Since Home Care Preferred started in 2012 the company now provides support in London, Devon, Cornwall and Hertfordshire. During the steady growth the focus has always been on striving towards an excellent standard of care and delivering a highly personal service.

In addition to standard care for adults or older people, we support a wide range of conditions that can inhibit the ability to live independently or require additional support that can be difficult or impossible for family and friends to provide.

Our support assistants receive on-going training and we ensure they are fully competent in providing the care that is required before we match them with our clients.

For individual conditions our team will receive bespoke training so they are equipped with the necessary skills to deliver the appropriate care. With some conditions we work as part of a larger team, often providing support to nursing personnel.

At Home Care Preferred St. Albans we pay enormous importance to the quality of the people we recruit.

Our attention focuses on bringing together the best possible team, people who share our passion for care and who regard their time at work as a vocation not just a job. We provide excellent, on-going training for all our team members. Training includes first aid, manual handling, personal care, food safety and hygiene, customer care, health & safety, as well as more specialised training that will assist our team with care and support for people with conditions such as dementia and learning disabilities.

The result of our vigorous recruitment and support is that we have some of the best support assistants to be found.

Home Care Preferred St. Albans support assistants make a real difference to our clients’ lives. They understand our ethos of care and desire for excellence and they make this show in their day to day support of those they help. We believe we have created a culture that sets us ahead from many of our competitors.

All of our team are employed directly by Home Care Preferred St. Albans. We take great effort to match the right support assistant with each client. We look at the individual requirements of each person and match them to a team member who has the appropriate skills and the most suitable personality.

All our team are carefully vetted and subject to UK Enhanced DBS (Disclosure Barring Service)  checks.  This is a government database holding details of anyone with a criminal record. We also obtain at least two references before anyone starts working for Home  Care Preferred.
