About the Company

Harpenden Mencap is a local charity that provides support to adults with learning disabilities in the local community since 1959.

Although affiliated with Royal Mencap, Harpenden Mencap is a self-funded organisation and provides support to people in Harpenden and St. Albans.

Harpenden Mencap is made up of 3 services that meet the needs individuals with varying degrees of disability.

The residential, supported living and domiciliary services support a total for over 40 people.

Shift times: 7am-2pm / 2pm-9pm 

What does this Apprentice Support Worker job involve?

  1. Providing an outstanding level of support that will ensure the people using Harpenden Mencap services live a comfortable, dignified, liberated and happy life. 
  2. Helping adults with learning disabilities to understand and navigate the world around them, promoting positive relationships.
  3. Supporting individuals to access and participate in their local community and social events to promote individuality and active citizenship.
  4. Supporting people to live independently by assisting with budget management, paying bills, housework, organising appointments and cooking healthy meals.
  5. Helping people to get ready for the day.  This may include prompting or helping people with medication, assisting with bathing, showering and using the toilet and helping with dressing depending on individual need.
  6. Maintain excellent verbal and written communication at all times utilising digital technology where required.
  7. Maintaining the Harpenden Mencap values in all contacts with the people we support, families and colleagues.
  8. To meet all learning commitments of the apprenticeship as directed by your line manager and the learning/training provider.

  • Experience of communicating positively with a variety of people with differing abilities

  • Ability to undertake learning to achieve a Level 3 apprenticeship.
