What does this Deputy Manager job involve?

 

The Deputy Manager leads day-to-day operations, drives service development and referrals, maintains strong relationships with commissioners and professionals, and manages the performance and wellbeing of the care team.

 

The role ensures person-centred initial assessments, timely reviews, and robust quality assurance so that people receive safe, compassionate, and outcome-focused support in their own homes.

 

  • Support service growth by responding to new enquiries, coordinating assessments, and helping develop new care packages.

  • Build strong working relationships with commissioners, social workers, health teams, and other professionals.

  • Lead and support Care Coordinators with rota planning, continuity of care, and day-to-day operational needs.

  • Manage recruitment, onboarding, training, and ongoing staff performance, promoting wellbeing and retention.

  • Oversee quality assurance through spot checks, audits, care plan reviews, and compliance with CQC standards.

  • Complete assessments, create person-centred care plans, and ensure timely reviews when needs change.

  • Maintain safe medication practices and ensure staff competency for delegated health tasks (where applicable).

  • Support effective scheduling and participate in the on-call rota to ensure smooth out-of-hours operations.

  • Maintain positive communication with people using the service and their families, resolving concerns promptly.

  • Monitor key performance indicators, produce quality reports, and contribute to continuous service improvement.

  • Promote health, safety, and risk management, including safe lone working and dynamic risk assessments.

Qualifications & Compliance

 

  • NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Health & Social Care (minimum); Level 5 in Leadership for Health & Social Care (or willingness to work towards) preferred.
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD; up-to-date mandatory training (safeguarding, MCA/DoLS awareness, medicines, IPC, first aid, moving & handling).
  • Enhanced DBS and satisfactory references.
  • Right to work in the UK.

 

Experience

 

  • Significant experience in domiciliary/home care, including coordinating or supervising teams.
  • Proven track record in service development/referrals, relationship building with commissioners or professionals.
  • Experience conducting assessments, reviews, risk assessments, and managing complex care packages (desirable).
  • Experience with quality assurance, audits, incident management, and CQC compliance.
  • People management: recruitment, supervisions, appraisals, performance management.

 

Knowledge & Skills

 

  • Strong understanding of CQC Fundamental Standards, KLOEs, safeguarding (adults at risk), MCA & DoLS awareness, GDPR.
  • Excellent communication and relationshipbuilding skills across multidisciplinary settings.
  • Competence with e-rostering/care management systems, electronic MARs, and Microsoft 365.
  • Organised, analytical, and able to prioritise under pressure; solution-focused and resilient.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (role may involve community visits).
